What you need to know
Silk Road Medical has named Jersey Shore and Hackensack 2018 Centers of Excellence.
Jersey Shore and Hackensack are the only facilities in New Jersey to earn this distinction from Silk Road Medical, a developer of an advanced stroke prevention procedure, for performing the TransCarotid Artery Revascularization (TCAR) procedure.
Details on TCAR Procedure
TCAR helps reduce the risk of stroke in patients with blocked carotid arteries. The minimally invasive procedure uses a FDA-approved neuroprotection system that temporarily reverses blood flow in the artery during the procedure to prevent plaque from traveling to the brain.
TCAR Procedure at Jersey Shore and Hackensack
Dr. Nasir Khan at Jersey Shore began performing TCAR in May 2017 and the medical center was designated a Center of Excellence in 2017. This is the first year that Hackensack earned Center of Excellence designation, having started performing the TCAR procedure the end of 2017. Both facilities were recognized for their commitment to this advanced technique and for their high quality outcomes.
M. Usman Nasir Khan, M.D., FACS, chief of vascular surgery at Jersey Shore, and David O’Connor, M.D., FACS, vascular surgeon and director of vascular research and assistant clinical professor of surgery at Hackensack, are two of the few credentialed physicians in New Jersey to perform TCAR. Drs. Khan and O’Connor are among the first in the country to gain expertise with the TCAR procedure.
Further expanding this level of expertise throughout the Hackensack Meridian Health network, Vikalp Jain, M.D., RPVI recently began performing TCAR at Ocean Medical Center in Brick, the only hospital in Ocean County to offer the advanced technique.
