March 4 was the official start date for Jason Kreitner, Ocean Medical Center’s new Chief Hospital Executive. Jason sat down for a Q & A so that team members can get to know him.

Why did you choose to move to Ocean Medical Center?

Throughout the Hackensack Meridian Health network, Ocean Medical Center is recognized by its tremendous warm and dedicated culture that is deeply-rooted in the community.  This was evident in the Great Place To Work survey where OMC scored the highest in the network as well as the ongoing extraordinary Patient Experience scores. I have had the privilege to meet several team members, leaders and physicians and immediately felt this positive energy. When the Chief Operating Officer opportunity became available, I was excited and truly wanted to become part of this amazing team. My collaborative and compassionate leadership style, along with my values and dedication to transparency, align well with Ocean’s culture.  I am so grateful for this opportunity and can’t wait to get started and engage with the team.

What impresses you most about Ocean Medical Center?

By far it is the culture that impresses me most about Ocean Medical Center. The team members, physicians and leadership team embrace a shared culture that embodies a sense of pride in everything they do. From the moment patients arrive at the medical center, they are treated to an excellent patient experience.  From the bedside to the valet service, to the medical staff and support professionals, it is evident that everyone is committed to providing the best possible health care patient experience.

I have also been impressed with the growth in expertise and services at OMC. The innovative patient-centered medical surgical unit at the Southwest Pavilion, the state-of-the-art Emergency Care Center and the recently renovated Cancer Care Center transform the patient experience with high quality care focused on the individualized treatment of each patient. Lastly, coming from a large academic medical center, I see the development of the residency programs and recruitment of residents as Ocean Medical Center’s future that will prepare our community for the next generation of physicians. Ocean has had many accomplishments over the past several years.

I would like to recognize the leadership and vision of both Dean Lin, past president of Ocean Medical Center and chief operating officer, Vito Buccellato. It is with their visionary leadership that I move into this new role with sincere confidence.  I am also very excited to work with the executive and management team as they have tremendous institutional knowledge and care deeply about our team and our patients.

What prior experience will be most beneficial as you transition to this new job?

I began my career as a radiation therapist more than 20 years ago.  Very early on in this role, I learned how precious life is and that working in health care is a special calling.  As we enhance existing programs and services and develop new ones based on community needs, I will be an advocate for the patient and will bring a sense of compassion and care to all we do. Throughout my heath care career, I have been fortunate to manage operations and develop programs for a broad range of clinical services. With the support and input of physicians, health care providers and feedback from our patients, we will work to creatively address the needs of patients and community through a shared vision, dedication and commitment.  

I understand that the COO title at the hospitals is changing throughout the Hackensack Meridian Health network. What is your new title?

In a memo that was sent last week from Hackensack Meridian Health CEO Bob Garrett and COO Mark Stauder, Bob and Mark announced that the new title for the chief operating officers that lead the hospitals will now be Chief Hospital Executive.  There is no change to the reporting structure of these hospital executives. They will continue to report to the regional president of their respective markets.

How will you approach your first 90 days?

Over the past few weeks, I have been impressed with the exceptionally collaborative and experienced leadership team at Ocean Medical Center. I consider myself fortunate to join leaders who care deeply about the medical center and strive for excellence every day. I’m looking forward to partnering with the medical staff to build upon their enthusiasm and commitment to support our community’s needs.  To do this, I plan to spend a lot of time listening – to understand the needs, opportunities and strengths of Ocean Medical Center. It is only through teamwork and a shared vision that we can make a difference.

What is your long term vision for OMC?

I plan to work closely with the regional president of the southern market, Dr. Ken Sable, to develop Ocean Medical Center’s future with a focus on the network’s vision and strategic plan. OMC has a tremendous reputation in the community and within our network that I plan to cultivate with the support of team members and physicians. My focus will be on quality and patient safety, meeting program objectives, and expanding and developing innovative patient-centered programs to empower our physicians and team members to provide the highest level of quality care to our patients.

Tell me about a little about you and what you do for fun?

My wife of 21 years (Linda) and I live in Clinton Township.  We have 3 girls named Abigail 15, Audrey 13, and Amelia 3, and a dog named Jack.  Weekends and evenings are very hectic with all of their activities.  When time permits I like to ski, run and hike.  We also enjoy spending as much time as we can with our friends at the Jersey Shore.
